Bill was a radio operator serving with Kilo 3/26 Marines when he was killed in action on January 31, 1969. It occurred on Operation Bold Mariner in a minefield on the Batangan Peninsula in Quang Ngai Province. The company was sweeping at the end of the peninsula when he or another marine near him stepped on a land mine.
